The Resurrection of All Comfort: How the Resurrection Ignites Imperishable Hope

As I begin writing this on Good Friday, I am at a loss for words. No amount of writing ability can truly paint a complete picture of the suffering our Savior went through. Nonetheless, here is a meditation of the death and resurrection of our Savior.

His Death Brought Despair

When I read of His crucifixion in the gospels, it echoes through my soul piercing the walls of shame that contain the reality that my wrongdoing drove the nails into his hands, that my sin screamed CRUCIFY HIM until my throat was raw, that it was my contempt that that rendered Christ nothing more than a commodity to be sold for 30 pieces of silver, that it was my indifference that inserted the spear into His side, that my faults flogged the skin off his back, that I laughed as the leather and stone ripped Him apart down to the bone, that it was my shame that sneered alongside the thief on the cross “If you are the Christ, save yourself and us!”

Then, in one last pain filled guttural cry to the Father, Jesus died. His heart stopped. His breathing ceased. He was dead. Darkness fell upon the entire earth. The temple curtain was torn in half. Then grief struck all who were watching. The women who followed him to Galilee wept and were overcome with a despair they had no clue they were capable of feeling. They followed Jesus as his lifeless corpse was laid in a tomb, and as their tears splattered and mixed with the burial spices and perfume they were preparing, all they could do was replay the graphic scenes over and over again; all was lost, Jesus was dead.

Hope was destroyed.

His Resurrection Brought Hope

Before the sun rose over the hills on that third day, Jesus was alive. “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, for HE HAS RISEN.”

On that day, hope was restored, death was swallowed up in victory, our shame was ransomed, our souls redeemed, our Savior resurrected.

The resurrection ignites an imperishable hope and an indestructible joy that carries into our every day lives. I am forgiven, the King of Kings calls me His own! Jesus Christ broke down the gates of hell and rendered sin and death DEFEATED. The power of hell was forever broken, His perfect love could not be overcome. What was once lost has been restored. Our freedom was won for us, our inheritance secured, and love was the catalyst for it all. The God of all comfort rose again, so that we could become His righteousness, so that we could obtain indestructible joy, an unperishable hope, and best of all, Himself.

Now with joyful anticipation and unshakeable confidence we await the return of our Savior.

Come Lord Jesus, come!
